woke up super duper early today coz i had a dental appointment. then travelled down to alexandra hospital. i saw that person again. -.- the dentist fitted the retainer in. and she was amazed that i managed to speak rather normally after that. and it doesnt count that i previously used retainers coz that was like four years age.
okae. for those who have just put on retainers, if you can say 'sixty-six' or 'precedence' without slurring it then the retainer will probably never affect your speech. lucky me.
later went to lunch at GW with bro and mom. ate at the japanese restaurant, ichiban-something. hahaha. omggg. its so hard to eat now. coz i cant take the retainers out EXCEPT when i want to wash it or when i go swimming (no idea why). so i stuck mainly to sushi and salmon. yums! later bought back more sushi and sashimi for tea/midnight snack. dammit. i forgot what a pain it is having retainers. =/
oh yeah. there were some caucasian kids who were celebrating a birthday there. i think its kinda sad. coz they couldnt choose what they wanted to eat. the two moms there choose soba (the green noodles) and two plain types of sushi to share among like eight people. i was like wtfff? that's really damn sad. even on normal days, i get to pick what i want (within reasonable price la).
my mom says its coz the caucasians arent so worried about 'face'. like for us chinese, it is important to splash out on parties, especially on the food, coz it would be embarrassing to invite people to come and have a meal and then for them to go back feeling hungry or unsatisfied. i think that's the difference. coz the caucasians merely invited them to celebrate while when the chinese celebrate, they'll tend to overcompensate.
i should know. my birthday parties are examples. i still have pictures from my infancy to about ten where i would have pool parties, swenson's party or parties at the singapore version of the US 'PlaySpace', an indoor playground with ball pits and climbing equipment. i remember parties at Macdonald's, costume parties or unique places. like this year, my brother went to a party at some reservoir where they had set up an adventure track for kids. the food would always be catered (prob out of convenience) and there would be quite a fair bit of leftovers.
EDIT* i think some ppl might disagree with me. coz from what i know, WJ never got to celebrate his bday or get presents from anyone until we started going out. it may make me sound spoiled but i was kinda shocked when he told me he never had a proper bday cake (those specialized yet commercialized from bakeries and not those lame cakes with just fruits on it and then you stick the plastic 'happy birthday' thing in).
so maybe its not everyone who feels that way. but from where i am now, and my group of friends growing up and even now, we do celebrate. maybe not a full blast party but just getting together, having a cake and opening presents. (again, i sound like an ingrate but its damn fricking true nowadays. if someone throws an extravagant party, the guests or parents of the guest feel they have to compensate it by buying a more expensive than usual gift as well). [btw, dont believe me then read the book 'playdate'. it shows us more of the 'normal' middle-class to upperclass lifestyles of today compared to maybe ten years ago].
then went to buy Island Creamery ice cream for my sister. i know she likes it so i asked my mom to go buy for her. now there is two tubs of new zealand ice cream and three tubs of island creamery ice cream in the freezer. heh. my family is pro-ice cream. =D
arrr. i wanna watch my jap anime. so tata! =D
what we could have been, 9:18 pm.
